NIW is saddled with the following responsibilities:

  • Conduct of Welders Qualification Test (WQT)

The Nigerian Institute of Welding through its in-house capacity and collaborations with both local and international organizations has fully developed capacity and capability in the following areas;

Welding Education and Workforce Development 

NIW education and training system in welding and related programs are globally accredited. NIW implements IIW education, training and qualification guidelines in the execution of its programs for both corporate bodies and individuals. NIW’s program address institutional and or personnel competency gaps within the following industries;

  • Oil and Gas
  • Civil construction
  • Railway and Automobile
  • Ship Building and Repairs
  • Equipment Manufacturing across a spectrum of industries including:
    • Education,
    • Health
    • Hospitality
    • Agriculture
    • Mining
    • Communications – Marine etc.

 Professional Development Programmes

NIW professional development programmes are organized for both corporate bodies and individuals. Courses are designed to address, improve knowledge and provide technical expertise on the job. Courses are organized both in-house and onsite client’s facilities with flexible schedule.

 Welding Supervision and Surveillance 

NIW implements the ISO manufacturer Certification System for the execution of; 

  • Audit of Fabrication and Construction Facilities
  • Audit of Personnel Competency in Production cycles

 Welding Regulation and Control 

NIW through its consistent involvement in trend monitoring and collaboration with critical stakeholders executes the following;

  • Development of Welding Codes of Practice.
  • Implementation of Welding Codes and Standards.
  • Initiate Standards for Enumeration by SON
  • Recommend Standards for Adoption by SON
  • Suggest Standards for Harmonization by the industry
  • Organization of Conferences, Seminars and Symposia on developments in Welding and its related practices.

Development of National Welding Capability Development Plan/Policy

In collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Science and Technology, NIW is working on a National Welding Capability Development plan. NIW is also working with the Federal Ministry of Science and Technology to establish a national welding Policy to ensure sustainability of policies, plans and implementations of welding and related activities.

Development and Integration of National Skills Qualification Framework 

 The Federal Government through the Federal Ministry of Education established the National Skills Qualification Framework (NSQF) under the supervision of National Board for Technical Education (NBTE). NIW is currently working with various stakeholders including the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board to integrate the NSQF in most skills practiced in the Country including skills that are used in the oil and gas industry, Marine, construction, agriculture, telecoms etc. When fully consummated, it is expected that welding personnel qualification and certification will be based on the NSQF.

NIW is the Licensed awarding body for Welding and related skills.
