MEMBERSHIP ACADEMIC DISCIPLINES

  1. Welding and Fabrication Engineering
  2. Mechanical Engineering
  3. Metallurgical/Materials Engineering
  4. Any other related Science and Engineering disciplines relevant to the practice of Welding.

 

ACADEMIC QUALIFICATIONS FOR MEMBERSHIP

Membership into the Nigerian institute of Welding shall have minimum qualification in various categories as listed below:

 

Craftsman Member

This category of membership is open to persons with the following qualifications:

  1. Those involved in Welding Engineering/related practices but are not with the relevant academic qualification with not less than three (3) years cognate experience.
  2. Holds a Final City and Guilds certificate in the relevant areas from any Technical College and any other related institutions.
  3. Holds a NABTEC certificate in Welding practice from recognised Institution with three (3) years cognate experience.
  4. Holds Nigeria skill qualification framework (NSQF) level 1 as minimum in welding and fabrication and metal works

 

Artisans Member

This category of membership is open to persons who have been actively engaged in welding and related field for a period of not less than two (2) years. Persons in this category may not be holder of any college certificate

 

Student Member

This category of membership is open to students who are in disciplines stated in Article 4.3 in a University, Polytechnic, College of Technology, College of Education (Technical) and Technical College or in any recognised Institutions.

 

Graduate Member

This category of membership is open to holders of the understated qualifications:

Minimum of National Diploma (ND), Higher National Diploma (HND) or Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) in Welding or related Engineering disciplines.

 

Associate Member

This category of membership is open to graduates in the Non-Welding Engineering disciplines but involved in the business of welding.

 

Institutional Member

This category of membership is open to Institutions and organisations that satisfy the conditions stated below as applicable:

  • The Institution engages in the practice of welding, fabrication or construction where qualified personnel of corporate member status are employed.
  • The Institution that runs courses approved for qualification for membership of NIW.
  • The Institution engages in research and development activities pertinent to the advancement of welding Science, Technology and Engineering.
  • The Institution that finances such establishments, which promote the science and technology of Welding, Fabrication, Construction and Quality Assurance.
  • The Institution/ organisation directly supervises establishments involved in the training and practice that is relevant to the welding industry in Nigeria.
  • The Institution/ organisation is entitled to representations at the Institute General Meeting in proportion to the strength of their employees who qualify for corporate membership status of the Institute.

 

CORPORATE MEMBERSHIP

Technician Member

This category of membership is open to the holders of any of the understated qualifications:

  1. Holds a National Diploma (ND) in Welding Technology from any recognized Institution and accredited by the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) and the Nigerian Institute of Welding (NIW).
  2. Applicants must have two years post ND cognate experience

 

Professional Member

Direct Route

  1. Minimum of Higher National Diploma (HND) / Bachelor of Science (B.Sc) in Welding Technology/ related Engineering discipline.
  2. May possess International welding technologist (IWT), international welding engineer (IWE), International welding specialist (IWS) or International welding inspection practitioner-comprehensive (IWIP/C)
  3. Applicants must have two years post graduate cognate experience.

 

Matured Route

  1. The candidate must be 35 years and above.
  2. Must have 15 years or more of practice in welding and related business and shall provide a written technical report of not less than 3000 words of his activities in the welding or related industry.
  3. The applicant must possess a certificate in Welding Technology from a recognised institution.
  4. The applicant may undergo a professional review interview.
  5. May possess International Welding Practitioner (IWP) or International Welding Specialist (IWS)

 

Fellow Member

This category of membership is open to professional member.

  1. The candidate must have satisfied for a period of not less than 10 years.
  2. Admission into fellow status of the NIW shall be either by invitation of the BOT or by direct application by a member.
  3. The candidate must have contributed to the growth and development of the institute
  4. The candidate shall not be less than 50 years of age
  5. All membership must pay a prescribe fee as may be determine by the institute
  6. The Candidate must have attended a minimum of three NIW AGM/ conferences
  7. Candidate by direct application must have presented ten (10) technical papers in conferences, workshops out of which five (5) must be welding biased.
  8. Have presented and defended research works in various areas of welding or related areas in at least 5 areas.

 

Honorary Fellow

Shall be conferred on a distinguished personality who has taken special interest in welding and by reason of his position, experience or service to the nation is adjudge by the institute to have contributed immensely in promoting the aim and objective of the institute. The recipient must not be below the rank of a manager or equivalent from a reputable organization in his place of work and shall not be below 50 years of age. The BOT shall confirm the recipient.
